Kick in the Box, an adult coed kickball team playing in the Savannah Adult Recreational Club, won the inaugural Southeastern District II Sports Festival?s Georgia Games kickball tournament held at the Paulson Softball Complex.
They defeated the Ballstars for the title.
The team also won the SARC postseason tournament this spring. The SARC fall league season will begin later this month.
Kick in the Box team members included: Greg Thompson, Daniel Mahoney, Karen Woods, Robbie Woods, Dan Corall, Christy Leclair, Matt Leclair, Megan McCormick, Jair Castillo, Tracy Castillo, Michelle Kelly and Patrick Kelly.
Ballstars team members included: Mark Gugliuzza, John Drzewiecki, Andrew Jones, Chris Mattison, Mike Barbour, Brian Lunsford, Carey Jones, Kristin Burgstiner and Courtney Patterson.
SGC Stingrays finish on positive note
The Savannah Golf Club Stingrays completed their third year of swimming with the Savannah Coastal Swim League, which had 10 teams and featured well over 700 athletes.
?This year?s team was our largest and most successful,? said team spokesperson Laura Mattocks. Former world champion swimmer Bill Pilczuk, NCAA standout swimmer CJay Wiley and stroke specialist Caitlyn Pett coached the team to a strong finish in the City Meet in July at the Chatham County Aquatic Center.
In dual meets during the league season, Ansley Drew, Clay Dekle, Chapman Shivera, Edie Levit, Mary Paige McCaslin, Jack Chandler, Ryan Chandler, Madeline Drew, Will Dekle, Libby Mattocks and McCall Smith led the team.
David Christian, Ansley and Madeline Drew, Dudley and Warner Johnson, Julianna Jones, Lucy Kelly, Edie and Sam Levit, Reid Markowitz and Will Taylor never missed a meet.
During the City Swim meet, the Stingrays had one day to see how they would rank against their competitors. Ansley Drew, Clay Dekle and Jackson Chandler earned the highest marks by being named City Meet All-Stars for their age group. The Stringrays placed third in the small teams division and earned their first trophy finish in team history.
Chapman Shivera, David Christian, Ryan Chandler, Will Taylor, Clay Dekle, Mary Paige McCaslin, Katie Summerford and Libby Mattocks set team records for the club. At the club?s recent team banquet, Edie Levit, Elizabeth Weathers, Charlie Moody and George Thomas Alexander were named Most Improved, while Mary Paige McCaslin and Michael Slatinsky were named Go-to Swimmers.
YMCA teams turn in impressive showings
The 2012 Swim Team Championships for the local YMCA branches of the Coastal Empire were last month at the Islands Y on Wilmington Island. Five YMCAs from three different counties sent teams to the annual championships. More than 130 youths ages 5 and older competed.
?This was by far a terrific season for all of these kids filled with life lessons and new friendships,? said YMCA marketing director Jacqueline Henry.
With 339 points, the host Islands Y branch finished first, while the Effingham Y took second with 334.
West Chatham Y nabbed third with 320 points, and Habersham and Liberty County ended fourth and fifth, respectively.
SPAL volleyball, football teams begin
The 2012 Savannah Parochial Athletic League middle school football and volleyball seasons kick off Thursday. The league features numerous private school teams from the local and surrounding areas. The league will run through early November with postseason tournaments for each grade level.
City begins youth football season
The annual City of Savannah Recreation and Leisure Service Bureau youth football season kicks off Saturday with age groups 6-U, 8-U, 10-U and 12-U. The league season, which will run through early November, fielded well over 60 teams last season and more than 1,600 participants.
