Wikipad Gaming Tablet Specs Released, Launching In 2012

Wikipad, the appropriately named company behind the upcoming Wikipad gaming tablet, has released the official hardware specs for its soon-to-be-released device (via VentureBeat). The Android 4.1 tablet will come packing one of those fancy, new Tegra 3 1.4GHz quad-core processors and 1GB of DDR2 RAM, which puts it ahead of the recently released Nexus 7 and behind the upcoming Ouya console in terms of raw power.

What's especially cool about the Wikipad from a gaming perspective is that it ships with a gamepad mount fitted with twin analog sticks, two triggers/bumpers, four face buttons, and Start/Select. There might not be many mobile titles that would take advantage of such a full-featured controller setup, but once you factor in something like OnLive streaming, the mount starts to make more sense. The peripheral is also designed to work with the tablet's speakers and power port.

There's more to the specs, but it's nothing you haven't seen before in a modern-day tablet. The 10.1-inch IPS display sports a 16:10 aspect ratio with a max resolution of 1,280x800. It weighs in at just over one pound and it's roughly one-third of an inch thick. Two cameras are also included: a front-facing 2MP camera and a rear-facing 8MP camera.

Now for the bad news: while the Wikipad was shown at CES with a built-in 3D display, that functionality will not be a feature of the launch models. It's possible that future versions will add it in, but nothing's concrete yet. As long as you're okay with that, you can start shopping for a Wikipad when it releases sometime before the end of 2012.

Indonesian police arrest 62 over Jakarta bar attack

Indonesian police said on Monday they had arrested 62 people, most of them minors, involved in attacking a bar in south Jakarta for serving alcohol during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

A group of 150 youths -- some as young as 13 and carrying swords and golf clubs -- raided the De Most bar late Saturday, smashing bottles of alcoholic drinks and damaging the property, said Hermawan, chief detective for South Jakarta police.

"Of the 62 arrested most are minors, and some...were armed with Samurai swords, sickles and golf clubs," said Hermawan, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

"They shattered the windows and door and smashed bottles, saying they wanted all bars shut to ensure the month of Ramadan is not tainted," he added.

Twenty-three people face charges of damaging property while four are additionally charged with carrying sharp weapons.

The group called itself the Prophet's Defenders Council, Hermawan said.

"It is usual for me and my followers to raid sinful places during Ramadan," the group's alleged leader, 33-year-old Habib Bahar was quoted as saying by the Kompas.com news website after the arrests.

"They committed sins there. They get drunk so action must be taken," said Bahar, who was also arrested.

In previous years Islamic groups have raided places serving alcohol, but Saturday's attack was the first this year since the fasting month of Ramadan officially began on July 21.

Authorities have ordered bars and nightclubs to close during the holy month, but the ban is not strictly enforced.

Ninety percent of Indonesia's population of 240 million identify themselves as Muslim but the vast majority practise a moderate form of Islam.

First GHz Edition Radeon HD 7970 hits shelves, throws $699 spanner into AMD's pricing strategy

The GHz Edition was supposed to deliver a significant mid-cycle performance bump to AMD's flagship 7970, without any attendant rise in cost. Instead, according to AnandTech, it looks like third-party vendors are looking to exploit the GE has a chance to max out every other spec in addition to the updated silicon and then charge a premium. Sapphire's new Toxic card is a case in point -- a 6GB double-helping of VRAM and a "Lethal" BIOS mode that takes base clock up to 1150MHz and memory clock to 6.4GHz (compared to 6GHz on the stock card). Those who can splutter up $699 will surely love it, but it's no substitute for the $499 upgrade that AMD originally intended.

Food Review ? Drink Coffee For A Good Cause at Mbuji Cafe : Emm ...

By: stephanie

July 30th, 2012 ? Related ? Filed Under feature photo

Mbuji Cafe is a coffee chain with African theme selling different types of coffee beans from countries over the world and recently opened in Tropicana?City Mall.?It was? at Sunway Giza for quite some years before relocated?in?Subang Carrefour.?Decided to try out this cafe?for its? impressive decor like a? tribal village?(also because Starbucks has? limited choice of food). Find out that part of the money will go back to the Tarzanian Community?after reading their menu.

I was rather disappointed by the food presentation of Bolognese Spaghetti (RM14.90). Served with two slices of garlic bread, but both don?t look very appealing either from its serving and the portion was too small, one is not enough to feed a tiny? hungry me. Moreover, the sauce is ?just enough? for the spaghetti and the? meat chunks can barely count with fingers.

Cheese Mushroom Bruschetta (RM9.90). The baguette bread slices are too thin and the bread tore apart as you lift it up caused by the soggy topping. Overall the taste is quite good except it was overly spicy.

Flat White (RM9.20) and Caf? Latte (RM9.20) is the only satisfying thing of the entire meal. The coffee is not too bad, but Flat White tastes better! Both flat white and caf? latte are said to be almost similar except that both have the different ratio of milk and espresso. Flat white originated in the Australia in the late 1970?s and contains more milk foam than caf? latte, traditionally served in a ceramic cup, if you want to know.

?

Assorted pastries (cookies, macaron, brownies, cup cakes etc) are available here. I have not tried their pastries personally but the amount of cream / icing / colouring used for topping? held me back (not sure if it?s? an aging symptom or me being overly health conscious).

Despite the food, I don?t mind to continue my coffee adventure with Mbuji Caf? since they serve nice coffee? and also something ?different?? like Coffee Orange and Coffee Mint. Hope to see?improvement in food?next time I return.

MBuji Caf? Lot G-51, Tropicana City Mall, 3, Jalan SS20/27, 47400 Petaling Jaya. Tel: 03-79317936

Twitter suspends reporter's account for NBC email address tweet

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Twitter Inc has suspended a British reporter's account after he sent a tweet revealing NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel's email address.

The microblogging service said Guy Adams, the Los Angeles correspondent for London-based daily The Independent, violated "Twitter Rules" by posting another user's private information such as "private email address, physical address, telephone number, or financial documents."

On Friday, Adams was among a number of Twitter users in the United States who criticized NBC Universal, a Comcast Corp subsidiary, for showing the London Olympics' opening ceremony on a tape delay to coincide with evening prime-time in the United States

"The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven't started yet is Gary Zenkel. Tell him what u think! Email: Gary.zenkel@nbcuni.com," Adams tweeted.

The Monday issue of The Independent carried an article by Adams that was broadly critical of NBC's Olympics coverage.

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

New AU boss urges focus on transport

Africa needs more infrastructure to connect its 54 states if greater political integration is to be achieved, the African Union's new top executive said Sunday.

"How do we connect ourselves," asked Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who was elected earlier this month as head of the AU Commission, the continental body's main executive arm.

Speaking to a women's group in Pretoria, the South African diplomat noted that most transport infrastructure on the continent was to link raw material production hubs to ports and not one country to another.

She also stressed that peace was a precondition to economic development on a continent still dogged by several major conflicts and rebellions.

"How do you build a railway in the middle of a war?," she said.

Dlamini-Zuma, a former foreign minister, also said that the Pan-African Parliament -- based in Midrand between Pretoria and Johannesburg -- should play a greater role in African integration.

Wine and Spirits Travel: New Finds and Old Favorites in Chicago

I try to make it in to Chicago as often as possible, but no
matter how often I do go there I always seem to find new things. In this case,
it wasn?t only the restaurants that were new to me. I was meeting with my
publisher, Dale Winespeare, at Cocktailsand Joints for the first time.

We checked into our rooms at The James Chicago, a hotel I
always loved for its modern comfort. This time they gave me a two bedroom suite,
which I settled quickly in before meeting Dale to go to Tavernita, a new restaurant with an exciting
new cocktail program.

Tavernita doesn?t just make unusual cocktails for individual
customers, they make cocktails for kegs. They also make their own sangrias and
sodas, and serve wine on tap. We were lucky enough to get to try a little bit
of everything and I was quite impressed.

I liked the Booty Collins, consisting of green tea-infused
Absolut Vodka, passion fruit, lemon and cayenne. I also loved the nutty flavor
of the Comandante Big Nose with hibiscus-infused Cruzan Rum, macadamia liqueur,
falernum, lime and nutmeg.? The Jay &
Tay is gin and tonic, in this case Plymouth Gin blended perfectly with a
homemade tonic ? that contains agave syrup and allspice.

I preferred the Red Sangria (which has some Hennessy Cognac
in it) to the white. As for the sodas, the Ginger Chile Ale is a must try, made
with fresh ginger, guindilla orange and blossom honey.

We tried a sampling of food, including the Croquettes,
little sandwiches filled with ham and cheese, and Greg?s Meatballs, which are
made from beef and pork and have a hazelnut romesco sauce which is quite spicy.
My favorite food item was the Grilled Queso, with aged cheddar, tomato
marmalade and brioche toast. Dale enjoyed the snapper, with artichokes, basil
and pine nuts.

We headed back to The James where I met with Jamie to learn
more about some of the exciting programs the hotel has going.? She told me about the seasonal menu changes
at David Burke?s Primehouse, as well as the Tails in the City program for pets,
and the Paul Frank?PJ program for kids.?
There is also now something at The James I find particularly
fascinating, the In-Room Cocktail Experience.

All of the rooms at the hotel now have supplies, including a
glass with recipes, to make your own cocktails. For under $30 (not including
the liquor), you can receive all the mixings and garnishes for some of your
favorite drinks. You can even learn how to make them right with a private
mixology lesson.

Dinner was at III Forks, restaurant in the new Lakeshore
East neighborhood. This large, modern place was very busy (even during the
week), and it?s no wonder with a huge wine list, interesting cocktails and a
varied menu that is also filled with great steak options. They also have a rooftop where you can get drinks and snacks, with a breathtaking view of the Chicago Skyline.

Dale started with an amazing crab cake and continued with
the Chicken Fried Steak, a dish that he couldn?t possible finish. I had the
onion soup and Tenderloin Tips, which were definitely tender and flavorful. We shared
some sides, the best of which was the Sweet Potato Hash (I took the leftovers
and couldn?t wait to have them the next day) and Six Cheese Potatoes.

It was tough to even think about dessert, but we were glad
we sampled the cheesecake and pecan cake before heading back to The James for
the night.

Romney: Overpaying taxes disqualifies president

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney says that if he paid more taxes than were required, he wouldn't be qualified to be president.

The U.S. presidential candidate tells ABC News that American voters expect candidates to pay "only what the tax code requires." He says he hasn't calculated what percentage of his income was paid in taxes but says that he's been audited.

Romney's vast personal wealth has been an issue in the campaign.

Democrats have criticized him for paying only 13.9 percent of his income in taxes during the one year his taxes have been made public.

Romney says he will release an additional year of returns before Election Day. That has left some questioning whether Romney pays a smaller share than other Americans.

Ecuador's President Correa suspends government advertising in several private news media outlets

On Saturday, July 28, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said that official government advertising will be withheld from several private news media outlets that have accused his administration of damaging freedom of expression in Ecuador, reported the news site Lainformacion.com.

The announcement was made just weeks after Correa told members of the presidential cabinet to not give interviews with private news media outlets. Correa alleges that the Ecuadorian private press is corrupt, and contends that it would be a contradiction for the government to support the media after telling Ecuadorian citizens to boycott them.

According to the news agency AFP, Frank La Rue, United Nation's rapporteur for freedom of expression, said that he didn't think it was a good idea for the president to tell his public officials which news outlets they can speak to and which they cannot. "That is to get in trouble, because that creates a censorship mechanism," said La Rue.

This is just one of the multiple measures that President Correa has taken against the Ecuadorian press since he became president in 2007. Correa has publicly attacked journalists in the country, called for closed several private news media outlets, Latin American citizens to rebel against the press's "dictatorship abuses," said that leftist governments "are affected by the persecution of journalists," and accused journalists of alleged "moral damages," which have resulted in multi-million dollar lawsuits and even prison sentences against the accused journalists.

GE previews new high-efficiency traction motor for hybrid and electric

GE previews new high-efficiency traction motor for hybrid and electric vehicle applications

by Jack Rosebro

General Electric engineers have successfully tested a prototype hybrid and electric vehicle motor with a peak power level of 55 kW and the ability to operate continuously at up to 105 ?C (221 ?F), using conventional transmission fluid as the motor?s sole cooling agent.

The motor?which GE says is 3 to 5% more efficient than existing motors could potentially extend the range of a plug-in vehicle?was developed as part of a $5.6-million US Department of Energy (DOE) project, and performs well over a range of bus voltages, from 200V to 650V.

The permanent-magnet motor uses a concentrated (solenoidal) winding, and is extremely compact, with a stator diameter of approximately 23.4 cm (9.2 inches), and a length, including end turns, of approximately 13 cm (5 inches). Power density is about twice that of today?s motors, according to GE.

The motor can use a transaxle?s fluid to cool both the rotor and the stator, producing a continuous 30kW of output over a range of 2,800 to 14,000 rpm at 105 ?C.

Alternately, the motor can use a hybrid vehicle?s engine coolant to limit operating temperature, rather than a separate, dedicated coolant loop, GE Senior Engineer of Electric Machines Ayman El-Refaie noted that many current production motors are limited to a continuous temperature of 65 ?C (149 ?F).

GE also developed new high-resistivity magnets for the motor, which reduce magnetic losses and reduce or eliminate the need to use more costly segmented magnets.

General Electric has discussed licensing the motor technology with electric motor manufacturers as well as automakers, and hopes to see commercial application in the automotive sector by 2015.

?This technology is scalable and flexible enough that it can be leveraged in a number of capacities,? commented El-Refaie, noting that GE plans to explore additional potential product applications, including higher efficiency industrial motors, high-speed oil and gas compressor motors, and generators for aerospace applications.

Next steps include a four-year project, during which time GE engineers will seek to produce a motor with similar performance characteristics, yet with no rare-earth magnets.

AT&T starts selling the Galaxy S III (Garnet Red) version today

We are now seeing vibrant color choices quite often with a lot of the new phones coming out. I mean, just look at some of the newest Xperia models. But it is indeed a ?fact?, that color choice can persuade a consumer to purchase a device.

For whatever reason, the user feels like its ?their own?, and more personal. And to give AT&T more leverage, the carrier has decided to sell a new color for the Galaxy S III, garnet red.

Now, it is quite interesting that this phone would come in red. You would usually expect black, or some plain business color. But this red is a mellow, yet extravagant look to be seen on the S III. And the thing that will drive AT&T?s sales, is that it is carrier exclusive, meaning no other carrier possess this color choice.

Of course the device still sports the same specs, such as a dual-core S4 processor and 2GB of RAM, but it should be delightful for those? ?red? lovers out there.

But the silly thing is, when ever I look at this phone in garnet red, all I think is, ?I havent had red velvet cake in forever?.

What do you think of the red color scheme? Do you think this will be something that other carriers will get? I would love to hear your comments.

Stakk Money Ent.: Common Sense: EBay's Turnaround Defies ...

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg NewsJohn Donahoe has led a revival of eBay. ?Our multiyear effort is paying off,? he said. Remember Myspace, Friendster, eToys, Webvan, Urban Fetch, Pets.com? Like meteors, they burned with dazzling brilliance before turning shareholder dollars to ash. EBay, Yahoo and AOL, the dominant Internet triumvirate circa 2004, seemed destined for a similar fate. The conventional wisdom has been that once decline sets in at an Internet company, it?s irreversible. But that was before eBay?s latest earnings surprise, which sent its stock soaring and had analysts scrambling to raise their projections. ?Can Internet companies ever turn around? The answer has been no,? Ken Sena, Internet analyst at Evercore, told me this week. ?But now, there?s eBay. The answer may turn out to be yes.? If so, eBay?s success has big implications for struggling companies like Yahoo and AOL, not to mention more recent sensations that have already lost some luster, like Zynga, Groupon and even Facebook, whose shares tumbled this week after its first earnings report as a public company disappointed investors. ?EBay has demonstrated that it?s possible to turn the corner even against long odds,? said David Spitz, president and chief operating officer of ChannelAdvisor, an e-commerce consulting company. EBay shares hit a peak of over $58 in 2004 and made its chief executive, Meg Whitman, a Silicon Valley celebrity. But by November 2007, when she stepped down to enter politics, the telltale signs of decline had set in. Its stock was slumping. Its dominant online auction business had matured, and growth had slowed. Sellers complained about higher fees and poor support. That year, eBay wrote off $1.4 billion on its poorly conceived $2.5 billion acquisition of the calling service Skype, recording its first loss as a public company. Analysts worried that eBay had lost its quirky soul, and was abandoning the flea market auction model that had made it distinctive and dominant in online auctions. By early 2009, its stock was barely over $10, down over 80 percent from its peak. Ms. Whitman was succeeded by a former Bain & Company managing director, John Donahoe. ?One of the unique things about the Internet is a company can be a white-hot success and become a global brand and reach global scale in just a few years ? that?s the good news,? he told me this week. ?But then somebody can turn around and do it to you. There?s constant disruption. One of the first things I had to do here was face reality. EBay was getting disrupted.? Little more than four years after taking charge, a buoyant Mr. Donahoe sounded like the chief executive of a surging start-up when he announced eBay?s latest results on July 18. So thoroughly has eBay been transformed that he didn?t even mention its traditional auction business. ?Our multiyear effort is paying off,? he said. Profit more than doubled and revenue jumped 23 percent. ?EBay is revitalized. We believe the best is yet to come.? In a stock market struggling with recession fears and the European debt crisis, eBay stock this week hit a six-year high. How has eBay done it when so many others have failed? Excitement about eBay?s prospects has little to do with its traditional auction business, or even its core e-commerce operations, although its marketplace division posted solid results and had its best quarter since 2006, the company said. Most of its growth came from mobile retailing and its PayPal online payments division, a business it acquired in 2002 for what now looks like a bargain $1.5 billion. As consumers embrace shopping on their smartphones, ?mobile continues to be a game-changer,? Mr. Donahoe said. He noted that 90 million users had downloaded eBay?s mobile app and that 600,000 customers made their first mobile purchase during the most recent quarter. ?A woman?s handbag is purchased on eBay mobile every 30 seconds,? he said. ?Mobile is revolutionizing how people shop and pay.? ?It?s hard to think of many companies that benefit from mobile,? Mr. Sena said. ?Usually it means more competition. But clearly, eBay is one of them. EBay is offering a one-click payment solution. You don?t have to type in a credit card number or PIN. It?s just one click on your mobile phone.? Mr. Spitz said he was recently stopped at a traffic light and the sun was bothering his eyes. By the time the light turned green, he had used his phone to order and pay for sunglasses. ?This is what commerce anytime, anywhere means,? he said. ?It?s here.?

Air France-KLM losses $1.1B in restructuring costs

PARIS (AP) ? Air France-KLM said Monday its net loss ballooned to nearly ?900 million ($1.1 billion) in the second quarter after it took a hefty charge to pay for restructuring that will see it shed about 10 percent of the airline's workforce.

The Franco-Dutch airline operator said its net loss grew to ?895 million in the three months to June 30, compared to a loss of ?197 million a year earlier.

In a statement the airline said its accounts included a ?368 million provision to pay for restructuring that is expected to eliminate 5,122 jobs out of a workforce of 49,301.

It expects "natural" attrition to produce 1,712 of the cuts, and then it plans to eliminate 2,056 ground staff, 904 cabin crew and 212 pilots.

Last month the airline said it was seeking voluntary changes in union contracts to avoid layoffs but that forced departures may not be avoidable.

The airline said "uncertain outlook" for the global economy and volatility in fuel prices and the euro currency "make forecasts for the latter part of the year difficult."

European airlines are struggling to cope with high fuel prices and weak economic growth due to Europe's financial crisis.

In May, Germany's Deutsche Lufthansa AG said last month it would cut 3,500 administrative jobs to reduce costs after the German company lost $521 million in the first quarter.

Air France-KLM's revenue rose 4.5 percent to ?6.5 billion in the second quarter, lifted by a 2.4 percent increase in passenger traffic, the company said.

Plustek MobileOffice D430

The Plustek MobileOffice D430 is a portable sheetfed scanner that can simultaneously scan both sides of a two-sided document, and can scan ID and other plastic cards. Users can choose between 9 preset (and customizable) scanning destinations using simple push-button controls. As it lacks an automatic document feeder (ADF), the D430 is best for scanning loose paper, one-page (including two-sided) documents, and embossed plastic cards.

At 2.3 by 11.9 by 3.7 inches (HWD) and 2.1 pounds, the D430 is on the large and heavy side for a portable scanner, but it's still small enough (and light enough,) to be reasonably portable or to serve as a light-duty desktop scanner. It comes with a power adapter and a USB cord for connecting to a computer.

It can scan plastic cards up to 1.2mm thick, including embossed cards, credit cards, driver's licenses, ID cards, and the like. Plustek sees the D430 as primarily for vertical markets such as healthcare and banking, at admissions desks, nursing stations, bank teller stations, and other situations needing a small scanner that can scan plastic cards.

Operation
By sliding a plastic panel in back of the scanner up or down, you can set the paper path, either straight-through (as you'll need when scanning plastic cards) or vertical, so the page will exit from the top. Scanning a page is a straightforward process; you insert a document into the scanner's front slot, and the scanner grabs the paper (or card) and pulls it into position. Then you toggle to the scan function of your choosing and press the scan button.

To the right of the paper slot is a single-character numeric LED, a scan button, and two function buttons that act as up and down controls for choosing between 9 preset (yet configurable) functions. They include converting text documents into searchable PDF or PDF image files; scanning images to MS Paint; scanning and saving images to file (the default is JPEG); scanning images of text documents to editable text for OCR; scanning business cards to a card-reading program; scanning directly to print; scanning to email; scanning to the DI Capture utility; and scanning to an FTP server.

Bundled software includes Twain and WIA drivers?the Twain driver lets you scan from nearly any program with a scan command?Abbyy FineReader 9.0 Sprint OCR program, HotCard Technology's BizCard Finder 3.0, Plustek DI Capture document management program, Plustek DI Express 6, and Plustek's DocAction scan utility.

Performance
Scan speeds for manual-feed scanners are of limited use, as much depends on how fast you can feed the paper into the scanner. I timed scans using FineReader at the default 300 dpi resolution and grayscale mode. For simplex scans, it averaged 13.5 seconds to scan and process a page before it would accept and scan another page, for a clip of 4.4 pages per minute (ppm). With duplex scanning, it averaged 16 seconds per page, or 7.6 images per minute (ipm), with each side of the page counting as an image. Both times are marginally slower than the Plustek MobileOffice D412 , and considerably slower than the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner ($325 direct), which averaged 6.3 ppm and 12.6 ipm in simplex and duplex scanning, respectively.

In our OCR testing using Abby FineReader ?(the one real "keeper" software program included in the bundle), the D430 did particularly well with Times Roman, reading the text perfectly at all sizes down to 5 points. With Arial, it made a single mistake at both 10 points and 8 points, but read all text cleanly at 6 points. It did a so-so job on business-card scanning; it was mistake free on a few cards, but most had at least two mistakes.

The D430 is a worthy scanner, suitable for its intended role. It's best for scanning loose paper and one- or two-sided single-page documents in addition to ID cards, as it lacks an automatic document feeder (ADF). It is a bit pricey for its capabilities. ?The Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner also scans in duplex and can handle ID cards, but adds a 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) to the mix. If you don't need to scan plastic cards, the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini and Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 each provide duplex scanning and an ADF.

PFT: Harbaugh says SF has 5 No. 1 receivers

Richard Bartel, Kevin Kolb, Ryan Lindley, John SkeltonAP

At a Cardinals Fan Fest last month, quarterback Kevin Kolb heard the boo birds.? At the annual Red and White scrimmage on Saturday, a record crowd of roughly 14,500 was more restrained ? despite Kolb?s performance.

According to the Associated Press, Kolb was ?heckled a bit by a few in the crowd? after throwing a pair of interceptions.? Kolb and John Skelton shared snaps with the first-string offense.

?It all comes out of my hands so it?s ultimately on me,? Kolb said.? ?That?s the way I?ll approach it and look at it and move forward.?

Receiver Larry Fitzgerald put the blame more broadly on the entire offense.

?I thought we definitely could have executed better,? Fitzgerald said.? ?That falls on us as players.? This is the first week of camp.? We?re running our base offense.? This is stuff we should be able to do in our sleep.? There?s nobody to blame but the 11 of us breaking the huddle.?

Kolb threw a touchdown pass, Skelton didn?t.? But Skelton didn?t throw any picks.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt cautioned against drawing any conclusions from their respective performances.

?Kevin was the guy that had the second spot in the rotation today so he was playing with the No. 2 line a lot.? In fact, we had a center in there that hadn?t taken any snaps because we had one go down in practice [Friday].? We had some protection issues where he didn?t get a chance to sit in there but he had some dropped balls, too.? It?s kind of hard to evaluate it.? That?s why you don?t make snap judgments when you?re doing this with the quarterbacks.?

Frankly, the fact that Kolb had the second spot in the rotation seems more alarming than his performance.

Then again, maybe Whisenhunt simply wanted to insulate Kolb from the indignity of being greeted by boos.

Syrian rebels survive regime onslaught in Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

Kofi Annan, who brokered the agreement, expressed concern Saturday about the weapons buildup in Aleppo. "I remind the parties to the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law, and urge them to exercise restraint and avoid any further bloodshed."

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said their thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

Financial Advice boosts Retirement Income

Posted on July 28, 2012

There are two ways to arrange your financial planning, the DIY approach or using an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).

It has never been easy though to quantify whether the DIY or advised route is more successful, but a new report offers some valuable insights.

The report, which is part of the Value of Advice campaign launched by Unbiased.co.uk and Standard Life, compares the financial situation of people with and without an IFA and makes interesting reading, especially when it comes to retirement planning.

The research showed a clear gap in the retirement provision of people who have and have not used an IFA.

Larger Pensions

According to the report clients of IFAs pay more each month into their pensions than those people who do not take advice. Unsurprisingly, clients of IFAs have on average over ?80,000 more in their pensions at the age of 65 and enjoy as much as ?232 more income per month in retirement.

The report shows that the current average pension fund of people taking independent financial advice is ?74,554, 100% more than those people who have not taken advice, who had an average pension pot of ?37,277.

The full figures can be seen in the table to the right.

Source: Unbiased.co.uk

Why such a gap?

The report provides few answers to this question, so we?ve come up with some thoughts of our own.

Firstly, it is possible to argue that the majority of people who seek advice have spare income to devote to financial planning, otherwise why would they see an IFA? It follows therefore that people who seek advice will naturally be able to afford to pay more towards their retirement.

Furthermore, although the survey only included responses from people with gross household incomes of ?15,000 or more, the group of people who do not take financial advice will include those who simply cannot afford to make provision for their retirement; the current economic climate is clearly making it harder for people to save for their future.

It is also possible to argue, and this is definitely open for debate, that people who seek advice are more motivated to start planning for their retirement.

However, although advice is not free an IFA certainly adds value.

A good adviser can help an investor avoid mistakes such as paying charges that are too high, investing in poorly performing funds, investing inefficiently from a taxation perspective, or investing in areas that do not match their attitude to risk.

An IFA can also help to dispel some of the myths associated with pensions and help some people to overcome their mistrust of retirement planning.

Dave McGovern, Head of Retail Marketing at Standard Life, said: ?A good adviser will quickly understand your financial position and help you identify your goals. They?ll look at the lifestyle you have today and the one you want in the future. They?ll understand how you want to invest and what your financial and life priorities are. With this insight they?ll prepare a financial plan that?s unique to you, and more importantly, a plan that will adapt as your needs change. In short, they?ll make dealing with your finances easier, giving you greater confidence and certainty over your long-term plans.?

Adding value ?at retirement?

Financial advice can be of real benefit as you approach retirement.

It is clear that one of the reasons IFA clients enjoy bigger incomes in retirement is because on average they have a larger pension fund. However, part of the reason may also be because they take advice when the time comes to turn their pension fund into an income.

At a very basic level, an IFA can help search the market to help find the best Annuity income and also advise whether an Enhanced Annuity is available from insurers who will often not deal direct, only through advisers.

An IFA can of course advise on other ways to taking an income from your pension, for example, would Income Drawdown be more appropriate or would a Fixed Term Annuity or Investment Linked Annuity offer a better solution?

Other areas of financial planning

The report also revealed that, with the possible exception of savings accounts, people who have taken advice are making more financial plans compared to those who do not see an IFA.

For example 51% of people questioned who used an IFA had Life Cover, compared to only 35% of people who did not seek advice. A gap was also clear when it came to Critical Illness Cover with 18% of people who had taken advice having this type of protection compared to only 7% who did not take advice.

Interestingly, the number of people saving money was higher amongst the non advised group than those people who had seen an IFA. 71% of non advised people had a savings account and 58% had a Cash ISA, compared to 68% and 57% for those people who had taken advice.

Who uses an IFA?

The report found that only 18% of people seek financial advice from an IFA, with 79% of those people who do take advice being over the age of 35.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the research found that it was older generations who were more likely to take advice, with the most likely time being between the ages of 60 and 69, when most people choose to retire.
