NEW YORK ? Visa, MasterCard and major banks agreed to pay retailers at least $6 billion to settle a long-running lawsuit that alleged the card issuers conspired to fix the fees that stores pay to accept credit cards. As part of the settlement, announced late Friday, stores from Rite Aid to Kroger will be allowed to charge customers more if they pay using a credit card.

The pact, which is being called by lawyers involved in the case the largest antitrust settlement in U.S. history, is seen as a major victory for merchants that have long complained about the billions of dollars in so-called ?swipe? or ?interchange? fees that they pay to banks for purchases made using plastic. But at a time when shoppers increasingly are using credit and debit cards, merchants will face a dilemma: Whether to charge shoppers extra for using plastic, and if so, how to do so without angering them.

Marilyn Landis, who was last year?s chairman of the National Small Business Association, said that the settlement is a victory for small businesses across the country because it could ultimately lead to banks lowering the fees they charge stores for customers? credit card purchases.

Landis, who owns Pittsburgh-based financial services firm Basic Business Concepts, said that would be a big relief. She?s now paying 3.75 percent each time a customer pays with a credit card. If bank card companies reduce the fees they charge her to 2.75 percent, she would save a dollar on every $100 in sales.

?That?s huge,? she said.

According to the National Retail Federation, the nation?s largest retail group, swipe fees costs for stores total about $30 billion per year. Mallory Duncan, senior vice president and general counsel for the group, said the settlement is a step in the right direction.

?What we need are changes in the rules that bring about transparency and competition that would be here for years to come,? he said.

The dispute between stores and banks dates back to 2005. That?s when large retailers, including Kroger Co., Safeway Inc. and Walgreen Co. began filing price-fixing lawsuits against Visa, MasterCard and other banks.

The retailers claimed the credit card issuers worked together to fix the fees that stores pay to accept credit and debit cards. The fees, which vary depending on the type of store and the type of card issues, average about 2 percent of the price of a purchase.

Visa and MasterCard make money on the fees that stores pay for each customer that uses credit or debit cards for their purchases. The fees are set by card processing networks but collected by, and split with, the banks that issue the cards.

The card companies long have defended the fees they charge stores. They say stores benefit from being able to accept credit and debit cards from customers, who often spend more when they?re using plastic instead of cash or checks.

Retailers fought to charge customers who use plastic for their purchases extra. They?ve argued that the ability to charge customers who use plastic more for their purchases would reduce their costs for accepting the cards.

But up until now, Visa and MasterCard have banned stores from charging customers who use credit cards more. Merchants, however, have been allowed to offer customers discounts if they pay with cash. Some gas stations do this, for example.

As part of the settlement, credit card companies have agreed to reduce swipe fees for eight months. The temporary reprieve on fees is valued at $1.2 billion. The settlement does not apply to debit cards, which have grown in popularity for small-value transactions.

?These new rules will give merchants the tools they need to put pressure on the credit card networks to lower interchange or swipe fees, which are the second-or third-highest cost of doing business for many retailers,? said Patrick J. Coughlin, senior trial counsel at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, and one of the lawyers for the plaintiffs.

Joseph W. Saunders, chairman and chief executive of Visa Inc., said in a statement Friday that he?s comfortable with the agreement, which he believes will not affect the company?s earnings outlook.

?We believe settling this case is in the best interests of all parties,? he said.

Noah Hanft, MasterCard Inc.?s general counsel, said in a separate statement on Friday that the decision to settle ?was based on our belief that MasterCard and our stakeholders are best served by an amicable resolution.?

?Although we have strong defenses to all claims, a settlement avoids years of litigation and uncertainties that are inherent in such cases,? he said. ?We believe that today?s settlements should resolve all issues with the merchant community.?

Visa and MasterCard stock both jumped in after-hours trading. Visa climbed 2.8 percent, and MasterCard rose 3.7 percent.

Sage Stallone Dead For at Least 3-4 Days Before Being Found, Officials Believe

Law enforcement personnel who found Sage Stallone dead he likely passed away at least 3-4 days and possibly a week before his body was discovered.

Off the record, sources say Sage Stallone, the son of acting legend Sylvester Stallone who famously appeared in Rocky V, had been living like a hermit.

Sage would spend days in his room, which was "littered with junk." A source called it a "disgusting" mix of cigarette butts, beer, soda cans and food.

There were also reportedly two drawers filled with various pill bottles, some of which were "huge." No one had spoken with Sage since Friday, July 6.

A housekeeper had been to his home at some point earlier this week, but had specific ongoing instructions never to enter Sage's room and did not.

The housekeeper was told to never even knock at the door for whatever reason, so it's certainly conceivable that he was in there for several days.

His mom, Sylvester Stallone's ex-wife Sasha Czack, called the housekeeper Friday after being unable to reach him and asked her to check on him.

That's when she discovered the body. From the evidence they saw - unofficially at least - investigators believe Sage's death was an accident.

Our thoughts are with his family in the wake of this sad story.

UPDATE: Sage's attorney says he posted pics to Facebook 17 hours before he was found dead, never exhibited any signs of drug use or addiction, and didn't drink.

This is very much contrary to what TMZ, who first reported this story, quotes its sources - within the law enforcement community - as saying.

Claire Diaz-Ortiz: How to Get a Job: A True Story (Part 2)

In Part 1, I showed you the awesome email I got from someone who wanted to work for me. Although you can read the whole email here, I'll remind you of the highlights:

• Direct ask: "I want to work for you and here is why." Bam.
• Smart flattery: Telling me I'm "amazing" sounds lame, because A) I'm not, and B) you don't know me. On the other hand, telling me I must be trustworthy because I have bangs is just brilliant.
• Shared interests: East Africa, ballet flats, Chai tea.
• Witty writing: If you've got it, flaunt it.

Although we all dream of writing the email of our lives and having the intended recipient email back within minutes, that's not what happened. Instead, it took me 27 days to write back. (I just checked). Why did it take me so long?

Like most people who have online lives, I get way too much email. And like most people who get way too much email, on a daily basis I need to more or less live in email-crisis mode -- wherein I write back to things that I deem "urgent" and delete or star everything else (yes, I use Gmail, and so should you). (For a further explanation of how I handle email and what I deem "urgent," see this article.) So once a month or so I go on email blitzes (a term I learned from @chloes) to slam through hundreds of emails in a few hours. A couch with good back support and a dark-chocolate mocha are near requirements for such feats.

So there I was, slamming through hundreds of emails, when I came across the one in question. Truth be told, the subject line looked spammy: "I want to work for YOU!" But when I opened it and saw that it included bullet points and a regular font (both signs that it was not a poor copy-and-paste job sent to thousands of potential employers), I started reading. Like a good book, the first sentence hooked me. And so I kept reading.

By the time I had finished, I wished I had a job to give the lovely young woman, but I didn't, and I wrote her as much. Verbatim, I said: "you are truly awesome and i loved this email. im sadly not hiring right but this ROCKED. could i post this on my blog if i took out some (you tell me) incriminating details? it's like you took a class to write a pitch letter this is so awesome."

For clarification: No, I didn't use a salutation or sign-off. And no, I didn't write with proper capitalization. And no, I didn't spell check or fix the grammar. If you're thinking right now, "Claire, is that really how you write emails to people? That looks like ungrammatical chicken scratch. Aren't you, um, like, an author?" let me reassure you with these words: At least you don't get emails from me. Seriously. According to my inner circle, my emails are some of the most difficult-to-decipher, garbled masses of letters to walk across this fine stage in recent years. But I digress. Back to her.

After I wrote her that aforementioned chicken scratch, she wrote me back. And if she didn't shock me with her news, then my name isn't Claire Diaz-Ortiz. In her email (keep in mind that only 27 days had passed since she initially wrote me wanting to work at Twitter) she told me that she was actually already working for Twitter.

Huh?!
