Deleting Yourself From The Internet - Business Insider

As the web infiltrates commerce and social life more each day, more consumers are becoming aware that their personal information is becoming less and less personal.

While some websites and applications have transparent sharing policies, stating exactly what information they will be using for advertising and other purposes, others aren?t so clear.

So what if one day you?re fed up?

Tired of the eerie advertisements that seem to cater perfectly to your personal history, hobbies and wants?

What if you want to erase your online identity with no strings attached, which brings us to the question:

Once your information is on the web, does it ever really go away?

The problem with online privacy

That was the question some of the top names in tech privacy were trying to answer at Churchill Club?s ?The Privacy Gap? panel on Wednesday, including Brendon Lynch, Chief Privacy Officer at Microsoft, and Facebook?s former chief privacy officer, Chris Kelly.

"There are still people who don't know what they're giving up when they sign up for services,? Lynch said. ?They don't know how much value is being derived from their data."

The general theme of the talk seemed to center around the fact that in today?s climate, there is no black and white answer concerning consumers? online privacy.? While some panelists called for major innovation in regards to online privacy ? World Privacy Forum?s Pam Dixon urged that the industry needs to start looking at ?privacy as a feature, not a bug? ? some saw privacy as a user problem.

"If I say to a consumer, ?I am collecting every single piece information about you but I am telling you this up front,? and you choose to continue to use my app, that is an educated informed choice and consumers have the right to make that choice," explained Jon Potter, President of the Application Developer's Alliance.

The general consensus was that online privacy issues are growing and consumers? tolerance level with companies using their private information is dwindling fast. Even Facebook was the target of FTC privacy charges back in 2011, accusing the social networking site of deceiving their users by telling them they could keep their Facebook information private, and then allowing it to be shared and made public.

They have since reached a settlement, and one of Facebook?s requirements now is to post a clear and prominent sharing notice and have users consent to having their information shared. Judging from Facebook?s over 1 billion users, most people continue to use the site despite knowing that their information is being shared and tracked.

It?s the same story with the thousands of mobile applications and other sites that share your information, essentially making your every online step traceable back to you.

These experts on privacy admit and agree that not only should there be more innovation that closes the rift between consumer privacy and sharing practices, but there also needs to be new technology surrounding deleting your data from the web.

"There needs to be an educated technological discussion about whether it's possible to erase your data from the Internet, and what does it mean when you no longer use a website and you want to back your data out," Potter said.

Tricks to erasing yourself from the Internet

If you don?t want to stick around for more online privacy innovation and want to clear the Internet of your data, you?re out of luck if you want an absolute erase button. For example, even after you delete your Facebook, some of your data traces may still remain, which is explained in their privacy policy.

So what can you do?

  • Check out Google?s removal request tool: It allows you to ask Google to remove search results or cached content.

  • Deleting accounts: When deleting accounts, you will notice that some sites simply ?deactivate? it. A tip for these situations is to delete every bit of your information from these sites, then link the site to a newly-created email address, and then delete that email address (tedious, we know).?

  • Contact sites directly: You can also contact particular sites and companies that have your personal information and politely ask them to erase it (again, tedious).??

  • Do not track: AVG security software has developed a tool that allows you to opt out of tracking on most web browsers. This means that browsers like Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox won?t be able to track your Internet behavior.?

  • Keep your identity protected: Remember, if you find false information, or are afraid that your data is being used fraudulently, signing up for an identity theft protection service can help notify you of any fraudulent activity concerning your identity.

If you?d still like to use the Internet while protecting your privacy, you?ll need to keep reading privacy policies and exercising your choice of whether to continue using a website or application knowing their sharing practices.

Until there is more innovation and maybe some uniformity surrounding online privacy, being aware of what you are sharing when signing up for a service is very important, as well as knowing that your personal data is extremely valuable.? Moral of the story? Once you?re on the Internet, it?s very difficult to leave.

Carbon backup app launches on Google Play [updated]

Android Central

Update: Whoops. Koush sends word that Carbon wasn't quite ready to go when we posted and that the folks in the forums spotted it early. It's not "live" live, so make sure you have the most recent version.

After a couple of weeks in beta, Koushik Dutta -- aka Koush -- has released his Carbon backup app on Google Play. The app uses Android's built-in backup feature to sync apps -- and crucially, app data -- to the SD card or cloud storage. If you're rooted, you just need the app itself. If not, there's an accompanying desktop app that can help you sync an unrooted phone.

A word of warning for Motorola users -- the app isn't available for Moto devices due to a bug in these phones which prevents Android's backup features from working correctly. A manual download link is provided on the Play Store listing for those running custom ROMs, or anyone who just wants to try anyway.

Carbon comes in two flavors -- there's a free version, which offers an basic ad-supported service. Then there's an ad-free premium version, which costs $4.99 and adds in more advanced stuff like Android-to-Android sync and cloud storage sync.

Both apps are available for phones running Android 4.0 or above -- hit the Google Play link above to grab the basic version, or head over here for the premium version.

Government mistrust deters older adults from HIV testing

Jan. 29, 2013 ? One out of every four people living with HIV/AIDS is 50 or older, yet these older individuals are far more likely to be diagnosed when they are already in the later stages of infection. Such late diagnoses put their health, and the health of others, at greater risk than would have been the case with earlier detection.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 43 percent of HIV-positive people between the ages of 50 and 55, and 51 percent of those 65 or older, develop full-blown AIDS within a year of their diagnosis, and these older adults account for 35 percent of all AIDS-related deaths. And since many of them are not aware that they have HIV, they could be unknowingly infecting others.

Various psychological barriers may be keeping this older at-risk population from getting tested. Among them are a general mistrust of the government -- for example, the belief that the government is run by a few big interests looking out for themselves -- and AIDS-related conspiracy theories, including, for example, the belief that the virus is human-made and was created to kill certain groups of people.

Now, a team of UCLA-led researchers has demonstrated that government mistrust and conspiracy fears are deeply ingrained in this vulnerable group and that these concerns often -- but in one surprising twist, not always -- deter these individuals from getting tested for HIV. The findings are published Jan. 29 in the peer-reviewed journal The Gerontologist.

"Our work suggests that general mistrust of the government may adversely impact peoples' willingness to get tested for HIV/AIDS," said Chandra Ford, an assistant professor of community health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the study's primary investigator. "HIV/AIDS is increasing among people 50 and older, but there's not a lot of attention being paid to the HIV-prevention needs of these folks. Older adults are more likely to be diagnosed only after they've been sick, and as a result, they have worse prognoses than younger HIV-positive people do.

"Also, the CDC recommends that anyone who's in a high-risk category should be tested every single year," she said. "These findings mean that the CDC recommendations are not being followed."

The researchers sought to test the association between mistrust of the government, belief in AIDS conspiracy theories and having been tested for HIV in the previous year. For the cross-sectional study, they worked with data from 226 participants ranging in age from 50 to 85. Participants were recruited from three types of public health venues that serve at-risk populations: STD clinics, needle-exchange sites and Latino health clinics.

Of the participants, 46.5 percent were Hispanic, 25.2 percent were non-Hispanic blacks, 18.1 percent were non-Hispanic whites and 10.2 percent were of other races or ethnicities. The data were collected between August 2006 and May 2007.

The researchers found that 72 percent of the participants did not trust the government, 30 percent reported a belief in AIDS conspiracy theories and 45 percent had not taken an HIV test in the prior 12 months. The more strongly participants mistrusted the government, the less likely they were to have been tested for HIV in the prior 12 months.

Several of the findings surprised the researchers -- for example, the fact that HIV testing rates among this population were not higher at the locations where the participants were recruited, given that these locations attract large numbers of people with HIV.

"This finding is concerning because the venues all provide HIV testing and care right there," Ford said.

And there was an even bigger, perhaps counterintuitive surprise. The more strongly participants believed in AIDS conspiracy theories, the more likely they were to have been tested in the previous 12 months.

"We believe they might be proactively testing because they believe it can help them avoid the threats to personal safety that are described in many AIDS conspiracies," Ford said. "For instance, if I hold these conspiracy beliefs and a doctor tells me I tested negative, I might get tested again just to confirm that the result really is negative."

By contrast, individuals who reported mistrusting the government may not have been tested because the venues where they were recruited were, in fact, government entities, Ford said.

The study has some weaknesses. For instance, the study design did not allow the researchers to determine whether the participants held their beliefs before or after being tested; thus, the researchers couldn't tell what prompted their mistrust of the government or conspiracy beliefs. Also, it's possible that the prevalence of these theories is higher in this group than it is in the general public and that some participants may have been afraid to tell the truth.

The next step in the research is to study other groups of older adults to determine if these views are more widely held than just among the at-risk population the researchers studied.

Steven P. Wallace, Sung-Jae Lee and William Cunningham, all of UCLA, and Peter A. Newman of the University of Toronto co-authored the study.

France says it secures access to Timbuktu

SEVARE, Mali (AP) ? Ground forces backed by French paratroopers and helicopters took control of the airport and roads leading to the fabled desert town of Timbuktu in an overnight operation, a French military official said Monday.

The move marked the latest inroad by the two-week-old French mission to oust radical Islamists from the northern half of Mali, which they seized more than nine months ago.

Col. Thierry Burkhard said Monday that the town's airport was taken without firing a shot.

"There was an operation on Timbuktu last night that allowed us to control access to the town," he said Monday. "It's up to Malian forces to retake the town."

The Timbuktu operation comes a day after the French announced they had seized the airport and a key bridge in a city east of Timbuktu, Gao, one of the other northern provincial capitals that had been under the grip of radical Islamists.

The French and Malian forces so far have met little resistance from the Islamists, who seized northern Mali in the wake of a military coup in the distant capital of Bamako, in southern Mali.

Timbuktu, which has entranced travelers for centuries with its inaccessible mystique, is some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Bamako. During their rule, the militants have systematically destroyed UNESCO World Heritage sites in the ancient town.

A spokesman for the al-Qaida-linked militants has said that the ancient tombs of Sufi saints were destroyed because they contravened Islam, encouraging Muslims to venerate saints instead of God.

Among the tombs they destroyed is that of Sidi Mahmoudou, a saint who died in 955, according to the UNESCO website.

Timbuktu, long a hub of Islamic learning, is also home to some 20,000 manuscripts, some dating back as far as the 12th century. Owners have succeeded in taking some of the manuscripts outside of Timbuktu, while others have been carefully hidden away from the Islamists.

Obama's War on Small Business

President Obama's second term isn't even a week old, and already Washington is eagerly analyzing the fight to find his successor.

Politico's Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman recently handicapped the Democratic field, writing: "Almost as soon as the echo of Obama's inaugural address fades and he instantly becomes a lame duck, Democrats are going to have to face a central and unresolved question about their political identity: Will they become a center-left, DLC-by-a-different-name party or return to a populist, left-leaning approach? ... Democrats must decide whether they want to be principally known as the party of Rahm Emanuel or the party of Elizabeth Warren."

Can't they be both? The New Republic's William Galston thinks Democrats can. First, he accurately describes a very real "civil war" occurring in the business community between big corporations and small businesses: "Corporations have sizeable cash flows and access to credit markets, which gives them a cushion against adversity and added costs; small businesses often operate much closer to the margin and are acutely sensitive to policies that threaten to drive up costs. Corporate CEOs can hire experts to help them cope with added regulatory burdens and can spread the costs over a large workforce; small business owners must deal with these burdens by themselves and have few ways [to] dilute their impact."

Obama On Football Head Injuries: The Sport 'Will Probably Change'

Count President Barack Obama among the football fans who believe the game may have to tone it down a notch.

In an interview with The New Republic, Obama opened up about the sport's dangers, suggesting that less action could mean more for both players and fans.

"Those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," he said. "In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won?t have to examine our consciences quite as much."

The president's comments come on the heels of a January lawsuit by former NFL player Junior Seau's family, charging that the violent contact he endured led to his brain disease. Seau, who died in May at age 43 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, was later diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Obama also told The New Republic that his concerns are stronger for the NCAA than the NFL, as players lack a union or salary to protect against damage suffered in games.

"You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on," Obama said. "That?s something that I?d like to see the NCAA think about."

Among the more frightening college football incidents in recent memory was the Oct. 2010 game involving Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand. The defensive tackle fractured his C3/C4 vertebrae and damanged his spinal cord while attempting to make a head-first tackle against Army, resulting in paralysis below the shoulders.

LeGrand's college coach and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Greg Schiano delivered a symbolic 2012 NFL Draft gesture, signing his former player to a contract -- complete with a jersey and helmet.

"My goal is to walk. ... I don't know when it's going to happen, but I know down the road it is going to happen," LeGrand said last May.

For the full interview with Obama, head over to The New Republic.

NBA Co-Owner Shares Secrets to Happiness - Care2

Does the idea of loving yourself as the key to loving others seem like a paradox? According to Richard Jaffe, one of the owners of the Phoenix Suns, it is fundamental.

?I?ve found that loving myself is fundamental to my happiness. The one person I have a relationship with for my entire life is myself, so it?s essential to make that relationship my priority. When I have the inner peace that comes from loving myself, I don?t have to look to others to fill my emotional needs and wants,? Jaffe said.

He shares five tenets that have helped him on his journey through life:

1) Don?t rely on anyone else to make you happy

2) Find your passion and indulge in it

3) Remember ? givers gain

4) Control your thoughts and keep them positive

5) Be the very best you can be at whatever you do

The millionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist shares his thoughts in a volume of inspirational poetry called Inner Peace & Happiness: Reflections to Grow Your Soul. They were written over a period of decades, in response to big life events, or simply to put into words what he was feeling at that time in his life.

By writing poetry, Jaffe lives out his second tip outlined above about indulging in his passion. ?Poetry helps to provide me balance in life between work, family and other external commitments. When I allow myself time to indulge in my passion, I recharge my spirit, my mind and my body,? he said.

Jaffe began his career in 1975, after graduating from Cornell University, with Nutri-Foods International Inc., a company that manufactured frozen Italian ices. After consulting with customers in order to turn the company around, Jaffe reduced the amount of sugar in the products and added fruit juice. He sold it to Coca-Cola in 1985, where it continued to grow.

After taking some time off, Jaffe decided to get back into business by starting a latex glove company. Due to the AIDS epidemic, the CDC had recently recommended an increase in protective wear for medical professionals. Jaffe saw the need for long-wearing latex gloves that did not cause allergic reactions, and in 1987, started Safeskin, eventually developing a hypoallergenic, powder-free latex glove. The company was named Forbes ?Best Small Company in America? in 1996, and later sold to Kimberly-Clark.

Jaffe currently serves on the board of Safe Life Corporation, a medical technology company, and lives in California with his wife and three children. One of his favorite quotations is, ?Do today what feels good tomorrow.? In one of his poems, ?Eternal Happiness,? Jaffe?s life motto is summed up:

?But a happiness with one?s own true self,

Not an easy bond to make,

Allows our heart to pour out love

Without the need to take.?

Setting yourself up as an authority has a downside. Apprehension about that downside keeps most people from going forward and getting started building their businesses. It?s the unspoken truth; it?s the humility factor in marketing information that stops so many before they even get started.

Humility is a good thing, but it is often mistaken for its evil twin, worthlessness. Feeling worthless is not true humility and it does ?way more harm than good. True humility is modesty and respect and it demonstrates a lack of false pride.

Humility Factor in Information Marketing

Humility Factor in Information Marketing

Writing and speaking with authority and humility at the same time WILL come through in your information products. It?s not just your tone of voice when you speak or the particular words you are using, but it?s an invisible ?vibe? that inhabits your work. It is the genuine essence of YOU that people can sense right away.

Your clients and customers like your vibe, or at least they are willing to tolerate it. And the people who are following you and taking you up on your free offers haven?t really voted yet. They are not ready to commit, but at least they are sticking around to see what happens and may get around to voting with their credit card eventually.

Accessibility and transparency are the primary qualities that reveal modesty and respect, in my opinion. Making yourself available and sharing who you really are, personally and professionally is no longer an option. People will sniff out insincerity and click away in a heartbeat. And worse yet, they will tell their friends, too.

CES 2013 through the eyes of our contest winner (video)

Many entered, but it was Daniel Orren who sent in a great green-screened video that snagged him a temporary spot on the Engadget crew at this year's CES. Hanging with the team in our trusty trailer, getting comped meals, roaming the floor, wearing mind-controlled cat ears -- honestly, it's probably just easier to list all of the things the photographer didn't do the other week in Vegas.

With the dust settled, we asked Orren how he enjoyed the trip. "The showroom floor was a lot bigger than I had anticipated originally, so naturally this was great as there were more gadgets." Amongst the highlights: "My favorite times would have to be hanging with the Engadget crew, it's nice just chatting with everyone about all the cool stuff you've seen that day/week and just geeking out." And as for that inevitable question, the one we ask ourselves right around this time each year, " I'd love to go back to CES if given the chance, and who knows, maybe I'll just go on my own in a few years."

Also included in the prize package was an Engadget Show segment to call his very own. When he wasn't occupied with the Steambox and 4K TVs, our film crew was following Orren around to find out what it's like going to CES as a first-timer. Check in after the break for the results.

This segment originally appeared in episode 40 of The Engadget Show.

Maze of gun laws in US hurts gun control efforts

WASHINGTON (AP) -- There is a legal avenue to try to get any gun you want somewhere in the U.S., thanks to the maze of gun statutes across the country and the lack of certain federal laws.

That undermines gun-control efforts in communities with tougher gun laws ? and pushes advocates of tighter controls to seek a federal standard. Gun rights proponents say enforcing all existing laws makes more sense than passing new ones.

An Associated Press analysis found that there are thousands of laws, rules and regulations at the local, county, state and federal levels. The laws and rules vary by state, and even within states, according to a 2011 compilation of state gun laws by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

These laws and regulations govern who can carry a firearm, what kind of firearm is legal, the size of ammunition magazines, and more. In some places, a person can buy as many guns as desired.

Not only can people acquire military-style assault weapons, they can also get gangster-style Tommy guns, World War II-era bazookas and even sawed-off shotguns.

"If you regulate something on the local or state level, you are still a victim to guns coming into other localities or states," said Laura Cutilletta, a senior staff attorney at the California-based Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

In California, most guns come from Nevada, where there is almost no regulation of firearms, Cutilletta said, and in Arizona, gun owners don't need a permit.

President Barack Obama earlier this month announced a $500 million plan to tighten federal gun laws. The December shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school launched the issue of gun control policy to a national focus not seen in decades.

Obama is urging Congress to pass new laws, some of which would set a minimum standard for the types of firearms and ammunition that are commercially available. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., on Thursday said she was introducing a new assault weapons ban.

The powerful gun lobby says the problem lies in enforcement of existing laws.

"Which begs the question: Why are we putting more laws on the books if we're not enforcing the laws we already have on the books?" said Andrew Arulanandam, spokesman for the National Rifle Association.

New gun laws will face tough opposition in Congress, particularly from members who rely on the NRA during election campaigns. The NRA contributed more than $700,000 to members of Congress during the 2012 election cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Recognizing the opposition in Congress, states already are passing their own new gun laws while officials from some states are promising to ignore any new federal mandates. As the national debate on gun control and Second Amendment rights escalates, the terms being used won't mean the same thing everywhere, due to the thousands of laws, rules and regulations across the country.

"The patchwork of laws in many ways means that the laws are only as effective as the weakest law there is," said Gene Voegtlin of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. "Those that are trying to acquire firearms and may not be able to do that by walking into their local gun shop will try to find a way to do that. This patchwork of laws allows them to seek out the weak links and acquire weapons."

Obama wants to address this, in part, by passing federal gun-trafficking laws that carry heavy penalties. It's difficult to crack down on trafficking because the penalties are too low to serve as a deterrent, and federal prosecutors decline many cases because of a lack of evidence. For instance, in order to charge someone with willfully participating in a business of selling firearms without a license, the ATF needs to prove that the guns were not sold out of the suspect's private collection, the Justice Department inspector general has said.

Obama has also called for a new federal law banning magazines that carry more than 10 rounds of ammunition ? a measure that was in effect during the previous assault weapons ban, between 1994 and 2004. High-capacity magazines have been used in recent deadly mass shootings, including those in Newtown, and in the suburban Denver movie theater attack last summer.

A high-capacity ammunition magazine means different things in different places

In California, considered by many to have some of the strongest gun laws in the country, a large-capacity magazine is one that holds more than 10 rounds. In Illinois there is no state law regarding magazines. Yet, there are laws regarding magazines in Chicago where the threshold is more than 12 rounds. But about 40 miles away in Aurora, Ill., this type of magazine is called a large-capacity ammunition feeding device and means anything more than 15 rounds.

In 44 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas and Virginia where these magazines have been used in deadly mass shootings, there are no laws against using them, according to a 2012 analysis by the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. If a federal law banned magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, it would become the minimum standard.

The definition of "assault weapon" also varies. There is no federal definition of an assault weapon, and the meaning of the term is inconsistent even within the gun industry. California defines an assault weapon as a "firearm (that) has such a high rate of fire and capacity for fire-power that its function as a legitimate sports or recreational firearm is substantially outweighed by the danger that it can be used to kill and injure human beings." The law specifically lists 60 rifles, 14 pistols and five shotguns. Neighboring states Nevada and Arizona have no assault weapon restrictions.

Federal law does not prohibit the ownership of any weapon, said Ginger Colbrun, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokeswoman in Washington. In order to buy or own certain firearms, including automatic weapons, machine guns and bazookas, people do have to apply for permission from the federal government. But as long as the application for a restricted firearm is approved, and there is no state law barring ownership of that type of gun, it's legal.

"There is such a variation in the number of laws that regulate the distribution of guns that there is no adequate minimum standard," said Richard Aborn, president of the New York-based Citizens Crime Commission. "The federal government has an obligation to establish at least minimum standards that have to be complied with before a gun can be sold anywhere in America."

World stocks higher, safe-haven U.S. debt slides

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stock and commodity markets rose on Thursday on encouraging economic data, while U.S. stocks extended a six-day rally, sailing through the headwind of a revenue miss from Apple.

The yen resumed its drop and oil rose.

Business surveys showed growth in Chinese manufacturing accelerated to a two-year high in January and a buoyant Germany was leading the euro zone toward recovery. But they also revealed France was sliding back into recession.

The broad S&P 500 and the Dow Jones industrials stock market indices both advanced. The Nasdaq composite index was lower, but the entire loss - and more - was due to the drag from a 9.8 percent drop in the value of Apple .

MSCI's world equity index rose 0.33 percent, while Europe's FTSE Eurofirst 300 index gained 0.27 percent.

In the United States, the Conference Board's Leading Economic Index rose 0.5 percent to 93.9 last month, pointing to improved U.S. growth ahead.

"Leading economic indicators rose, new jobless claims are at the lowest level in many years, and Chinese manufacturing data moved to a positive trajectory," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, with more than $1 trillion in assets under management. "The Chinese data bodes well for demand which translates into top line revenue growth. If global demand goes up, it's good for U.S. equities."

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 77.37 points, or 0.56 percent, at 13,856.70. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 3.82 points, or 0.26 percent, at 1,498.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 8.22 points, or 0.26 percent, at 3,145.45.

Apple shares were down 10.3 percent at $461.

The stock market's continued strength and news that the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits hit a five-year low last week weighed on safe-haven U.S. debt.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell 9/32 in price; its yield rose to 1.86 percent, as investors moved funds into stocks.

"It's a reach for return in the equities market," said Todd Colvin, senior vice president of global institutional sales with R.J. O'Brien & Associates in Chicago. "Risk takers are being rewarded so far this year."

For the euro zone as whole, January's flash euro zone purchasing managers index pointed to more weakness ahead for a region already mired in recession. But it also pointed to improvement later in the year.

"The pace of recession is clearly easing," said Marco Valli, chief euro zone economist at UniCredit.

The data showed the contrasting fortunes of Germany and France, with German activity at its strongest levels in a year and the French PMI at its lowest level since March 2009.

"The current gap between the German and French composite PMI indices is unprecedented," said Ken Wattret, chief euro zone economist at BNP Paribas.

That gap helped lift German bond prices to a three-week high, a move supported by Spanish data showing another record high unemployment rate and a rising tide of bad bank loans.

French bonds were seemingly unaffected by the data, with the 10-year bond yield 3 basis points lower on the day at 2.17 percent.

CHINA TURNS

Investors in British stocks shrugged off worries about Europe and focused on the better Chinese manufacturing data and its implications for mining companies. That pushed London's FTSE 100 up 1.09 percent.

The growing confidence in the pace of China's economic recovery helped keep Brent crude oil above $113 a barrel and copper rose to $8,115 a tonne. Gold was priced at $1,672.36 an ounce.

In the currency markets, the yen posted steep losses across the board after three days of gains, hurt by Japan's record trade deficit and comments from a Japanese economic official saying the government has no problem with the dollar hitting 100 yen.

Traders cited reports quoting Deputy Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura as saying the yen's decline is not over and a dollar/yen level of 100 would not be a concern.

"(Nishimura) represents another official voice favoring further yen weakness and the remarks probably supported the latest bounce in dollar/yen, which began overnight," said Bob Lynch, chief currency strategist at HSBC in New York.

The dollar was last up 1.59 percent at 90.00 yen, rallying from a one-week low of 88.06 yen hit the previous day.

The yen's weakness became further entrenched after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he expected the Bank of Japan to achieve its 2 percent inflation goal as soon as possible.

Earlier this week, the BoJ delivered its most aggressive policy easing yet to snap the economy out of years of stagnation.

The euro rose 0.4 percent against the dollar at $1.3372, not far from an 11-month high hit on January 14. The euro was up 1.6 percent against the yen at 119.92 yen.

Analysts said an influential German Ifo survey due on Friday, along with an announcement on bank plans to repay loans taken from the European Central Bank a year ago, would sway the euro in the coming days.

Martinez returns to Red Sox as assistant to GM

BOSTON (AP) ? Former Boston manager Terry Francona gave Pedro Martinez a big hug along with some advice to help him in his new job as a special assistant to the Red Sox general manager.

"Now he's going to have to be on time," Francona needled his former pitcher on Thursday when the two were reunited at the annual dinner of the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

A three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star who spent seven seasons in Boston, Martinez returned to the city where he had his best years. His role is still undefined ? he has the same title as former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek ? but Martinez said he would be willing to help with the pitchers, work in the minor leagues and generally be a friend to GM Ben Cherington.

"Varitek, Pedro ? they are the Red Sox," Francona said.

Martinez spent his first day back on the Boston masthead at a lunch with Cherington, new Red Sox manager John Farrell, CEO Larry Lucchino and Boston Mayor Tom Menino and some civic leaders. Martinez said Menino had been welcoming to him when he first arrived in Boston in 1998 and once again was forthcoming with advice about where to live and what to do in the city.

"Menino was a friend to me," Martinez said.

Martinez was acquired from the salary-dumping Montreal Expos after the 1997 season, a few months before he would be awarded his first Cy Young. He instantly became the ace of the Red Sox staff, the biggest character in a colorful clubhouse and a key part of the team that won the 2004 World Series to end the franchise's 86-year title drought.

Martinez said his experience with the team during that era can help players who are trying to recover from last season's last-place finish.

"There was something missing, in the clubhouse, the players, around Fenway. This offseason, they realized that they lost something," Martinez said, noting that the addition of Farrell as manager and players such as Shane Victorino and Mike Napoli. "We have the right group of people. These guys coming in have great, great character."

Martinez, who's now 41, went 117-37 with a 2.52 ERA in Boston. His .760 winning percentage is the best in franchise history, and he ranks third with 1,683 in strikeouts and sixth with 117 wins in a Red Sox uniform. He is also the franchise's all-time leader with 80 postseason strikeouts; in the 1999 All-Star game at Fenway Park, he struck out the first four batters he faced.

In an 18-year major league career with the Dodgers, Expos, Red Sox, Mets and Phillies, Martinez went 219-100 with a 2.93 ERA and 3,154 strikeouts. He has a career .687 winning percentage, and he led the majors in ERA five times, including 1997 when he had a 1.90 ERA with Montreal.

"I am thrilled to be returning to this organization and to the city I love," Martinez said. "It is an honor to be back with the Red Sox and help in any way I can. I am grateful to our leaders; I believe in them, and I thank them for allowing me to return to the field and help us win again.

"My heart will always live in Boston."

Also Thursday, the Red Sox signed left-hander Craig Breslow to a two-year contract with a club option for 2015. Breslow had been eligible for salary arbitration. Breslow went 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 63 appearances for the Diamondbacks and Red Sox. Twenty of the 23 appearances the Yale graduate made in Boston were scoreless.

Love triumphs over hate to make exotic new compound: Compound could be useful in batteries, semiconductors, memory devices

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Northwestern University graduate student Jonathan Barnes had a hunch for creating an exotic new chemical compound, and his idea that the force of love is stronger than hate proved correct. He and his colleagues are the first to permanently interlock two identical tetracationic rings that normally are repelled by each other. Many experts had said it couldn't be done.

On the surface, the rings hate each other because each carries four positive charges (making them tetracationic). But Barnes discovered by introducing radicals (unpaired electrons) onto the scene, the researchers could create a love-hate relationship in which love triumphs.

Unpaired electrons want to pair up and be stable, and it turns out the attraction of one ring's single electrons to the other ring's single electrons is stronger than the repelling forces.

The process links the rings not by a chemical bond but by a mechanical bond, which, once in place, cannot easily be torn asunder.

The study detailing this new class of stable organic radicals will be published Jan. 25 by the journal Science.

"It's not that people have tried and failed to put these two rings together -- they just didn't think it was possible," said Sir Fraser Stoddart, a senior author of the paper. "Now this molecule has been made. I cannot overemphasize Jonathan's achievement -- it is really outside the box. Now we are excited to see where this new chemistry leads us."

Sir Fraser is the Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern. In the late 1980s, he was one of the early pioneers to introduce an additional type of bond, the mechanical bond, into chemical compounds.

The new Northwestern compound has attractive electronic characteristics and can be made quickly and inexpensively. Down the road, it may be possible to expand this first linked pair into a longer chain-like polymer where this methodology could be useful in new technologies for batteries, semiconductors and electronic memory devices.

Driven by curiosity, Barnes only began to look at the radical chemistry of the ring cyclobis (paraquat-p-phenylene) two years ago, nearly 25 years after the ring was first made.

"I wondered what would happen if we took it all the way to the max," said Barnes, the paper's first author and a member of Stoddart's group. "Can we take two of these rings, each with four positive charges, and make them live together?"

The rings repel each other like the positive poles of two magnets. Barnes saw an opportunity where he thought he could tweak the chemistry by using radicals to overcome the hate between the two rings.

"We made these rings communicate and love each other under certain conditions, and once they were mechanically interlocked, the bond could not be broken," Barnes said.

Barnes' first strategy -- adding electrons to temporarily reduce the charge and bring the two rings together -- worked the first time he tried it. He, Stoddart and their colleagues started with a full ring and a half ring that they then closed up around the first ring (using some simple chemistry), creating the mechanical bond.

When the compound is oxidized and electrons lost, the strong positive forces come roaring back -- "It's hate on all the time," Barnes said -- but then it is too late for the rings to be parted. "That's the beauty of this system," he added.

Most organic radicals possess short lifetimes, but this unusual radical compound is stable in air and water. The compound tucks the electrons away inside the structure so they can't react with anything in the environment. The tight mechanical bond endures despite the unfavorable electrostatic interactions.

The two interlocked rings house an immense amount of charge in a mere cubic nanometer of space. The compound, a homo[2]catenane, can adopt one of six oxidation states and can accept up to eight electrons in total.

"Anything that accepts this many electrons has possibilities for batteries," Barnes said.

"Applications beckon," Stoddart agreed. "Now we need to spend more time with materials scientists and people who make devices to see how this amazing compound can be used."

4 dangerous dating games you shouldn't play | eHarmony ...

Some people say that dating is a game but in most games there are winners and losers. We at eHarmony believe that in the pursuit of a healthy, lasting relationship no-one should feel like a loser so discourage dangerous game playing.

People often refer to dating as a game but it can be very unhelpful to view it in this way if what you are looking for is a healthy, committed relationship with someone you are really compatible with. There are books and articles galore explaining the rules and the strategies and moves you should deploy in this game of love. While some of them may help you be successful in securing dates there are some games that are actually dangerous and can not be deployed without the risk of seriously hurting someone else?s feelings.

1. Exploitation of weakness

In any game of strategy the way to win is to identify the opponent?s weaknesses and exploit them. In personal relationships this can take many forms. Often what is exploited is someone?s vulnerability or neediness. A predatory dater could be on the lookout for people who are naive, vulnerable, lonely or isolated and attempt to develop a sexual relationship with no intention of making a commitment. On the other hand someone may look for a person with lots of money and feign affection to exploit their wealth.

Whatever the situation what is missing is a regard for the needs and interests of the other person ? the one who is game playing is only interested in their own needs and will care little for the damage they do to the other person when they no longer want them. This is a very dangerous game and one that can do serious long term emotional damage as the victim?s trust will be broken ? the better the player the more damage is done.

Often people play this game because they are afraid of being vulnerable themselves and mistakenly believe they will only get their needs met through dominating or manipulating another person. Until they stop the game they will always be the losers because they won?t ever know what it is like to love and care for someone else.

2.?Bluffing

This is a handy and useful tactic in a game of poker but bluffing has no part to play when it comes to dating. Stringing someone along because you have nothing better going on; allowing them to think your feelings for them are deeper than they are; using them to get back at your ex or because you can?t bear to be without a date on a Saturday night are all bad tactics. ?Unless you are being upfront about what it is you are doing then you are bluffing and using them and it will eventually backfire on you.

As frightening as it may be to be on your own and face your feelings of loneliness it is better than living a lie. Any relationship based on deceit will eventually crumble and is likely to do harm to both parties as well as stopping them moving on to healthier relationships.

3.????? A numbers game

Online dating means that you have the potential to meet many matches ? like fishing in the sea rather than in the little pond that might be your hometown or workplace. It is generally accepted that people will be chatting with more than one match at a time and may even be dating several people at once. This is absolutely fine as long as you are open and upfront about it. Most people will continue in this way until they meet someone they really connect with and after a few dates they become exclusive, letting the others down gently.

This only becomes a dangerous dating game if you are not honest and are pretending you are seeing someone exclusively while still meeting other people behind their back. You may think you are being smart because you are upping the odds of getting a real catch but if your dating strategy is based on dishonesty then the chances are that you will never land a winner.

4.????? Playing online

It is now generally accepted that internet use can become highly addictive, more so now that most people have smart phones and can access their messages any time, any place and any where. Every time we see the little symbol or light that indicates a new message a little bit of serotonin is released in the brain making us feel good.? Some people get so hooked on this that they spend the majority of their time in front of the computer communicating with matches but hardly any meeting anyone in person. This can damage you confidence and your interpersonal skills so unless you want your primary relationship to be with your computer then you need to build relationships face to face ? virtual love is a poor substitute for the real thing.

Health and environment: A closer look at plastics

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Plastics have transformed modern society, providing attractive benefits but also befouling waterways and aquifers, depleting petroleum supplies and disrupting human health.

Rolf Halden, a researcher at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute has been following the chemical trail of plastics, quantifying their impact on human health and the environment. In a new overview appearing in the journal Reviews on Environmental Health, Halden and his co-author, ASU student Emily North, detail the risks and societal rewards of plastics and describe strategies to mitigate their negative impacts, through reconsideration of plastic composition, use and disposal.

"We are in need of a second plastic revolution. The first one brought us the age of plastics, changing human society and enabling the birth and explosive growth of many industries. But the materials used to make plastics weren't chosen judiciously and we see the adverse consequences in widespread environmental pollution and unnecessary human exposure to harmful substances. Smart plastics of the future will be equally versatile but also non-toxic, biodegradable and made from renewable energy sources," says Halden.

Plastics are made up of a network of molecular monomers linked to form macromolecules. These versatile chemical structures come in enormous varieties and today over 20 major forms of plastics exist. Plastics are typically lightweight and biocompatible. Along with their myriad uses in everyday life, plastics fulfill many needs in the public health arena, where they are found in items including absorbable sutures, prosthetics and engineered tissues.

Further, plastics may be manufactured at low cost using little energy and their adaptable composition allows them to be synthesized in soft, transparent or flexible forms suitable for a broad range of medical applications. Because they can be readily disposed of, items like latex gloves, dialysis tubes, intravenous bags and plastic syringes eliminate the need for repeated sterilization, which is often costly and inefficient. Such single-use items have had a marked effect on reducing blood-borne infections, including hepatitis B and HIV.

Many varieties of polymers are produced to meet the expanding needs of modern medicine. Polymer chemistry is used to produce sophisticated drug delivery systems for the pharmaceutical industry; material to cement bone for hip replacements is made with polymer polymethylmethacrylate and polymer scaffolds are revolutionizing the practice of tissue engineering.

Researchers like Halden have shown, however, that the benefits of global plastics use can come at a steep price in terms of both human and environmental health. Continuous contact with plastic products, from the beginning to the end of life has caused chemical ingredients -- some with potentially harmful effects -- to form steady-state concentrations in the human body.

In recent years, two plastic-associated compounds have been singled out for particular scrutiny, due to their endocrine-disrupting properties: Bisphenol A (BPA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP). Studies of bioaccumulation have shown that detectable levels of BPA in urine have been identified in 95 percent of the adult population in the U.S. and both BPA and DEHP have been associated, through epidemiological and animal studies, with adverse effects on health and reproduction. These include early sexual maturation, decreased male fertility, aggressive behavior and other effects. Concern over BPA exposure, particularly for highly vulnerable members of the population, has recently led the Food and Drug Administration to place a ban on BPA use in infant bottles, spill proof cups and other products intended for infants and toddlers.

Similar issues exist with DEHP, a plasticizer found in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Because this additive is not tightly bound to the plastics in which it is used, the potential exists for DEHP to leach out and enter the body, causing unwanted exposure and affecting health. Both animal and human studies suggest DEHP may produce harmful effects, including insulin resistance, increased waist circumference and changes to male and female reproductive systems.

A variety of other plastic-related chemicals are currently under evaluation by Halden's group for their adverse effects on health and the environment. These include polyhalogenated flame retardants, polyfluorinated compounds and antimicrobials containing plastic additives such as triclosan and triclocarban.

While researchers are still at the early stages of assessing the risks to human health posed by plastics use, negative impacts on the environment have been a growing concern for many years. Over 300 million metric tons of plastics are produced worldwide each year. Roughly 50 percent of this volume is made up of products disposed of within one year of purchase.

Plastics today represent 15-25 percent of all hospital waste in the U.S. Some newer plastics are biodegradeable, but the rest must be incinerated, disposed of in landfills, or recycled. All of these methods have drawbacks and carry environmental risk, as the new study explains.

Biodegradeable plastics may break down in the environment into smaller polymer constituents, which may still pose a risk to the environment. Incineration liberates greenhouse gases associated with climate change. Landfilling of plastics, particularly in the enormous volumes now produced, may be an impractical use of land resources and a danger exists of plastics constituents entering the ground water. Finally, recycling of plastics requires careful sorting of plastic material, which is difficult. Recycled plastics tend to be of lower quality and may not be practical for health care and other applications.

As Halden explains, the problems posed by plastics need to be addressed on several fronts, and current research offers significant hope for improvements to human and environmental health. Better biodegradeable plastics are now being developed using carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide compounds and applying metal complexes as catalysts.

The technique provides a double benefit, binding unwanted greenhouse gases, while avoiding the competition with the human food supply. (Conventional bioplastics are made with plant sources like corn and molasses.) One application would be to replace BPA-containing epoxy resins lining metal food cans, thereby dramatically reducing BPA exposure while also sequestering 180 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (greenhouse) emissions.

The use of disposable items is also undergoing a reevaluation, in light of the potential environmental toll. In some cases, reusable plastic products are gaining ground, and estimates suggest the potential for a 50 percent reduction in medical equipment costs. Almost a quarter of all U.S. hospitals are now using reprocessing to decrease disposable waste.

Nevertheless, the largest source of plastics-related environmental damage stems from the overuse of items whose long-term harm outweighs their short-term benefit. Typically, these are consumer convenience items, often quickly discarded after a short use-life, including plastic water bottles, grocery bags, packaging, Styrofoam cups, Teflon-coated dental floss and other products. Halden recommends a thorough life-cycle assessment of plastics-based products, to identify safer, more sustainable replacement materials that reduce adverse effects to the environment and human health from plastic consumption.

"Many current types and consumption patterns of plastics are unsusustainable, as indicated by harmful plastic components circulating in our blood streams and multiple giant garbage patches of plastic debris swirling in the world's oceans. Continued use of plastics into the future will require us to redesign these indispensible materials of daily life to make them compatible with human health and the ecosystems we rely on," says Halden.
