Jersey Shore star Vinny Guadagnino admits Snooki's pregnancy is not something he saw coming ... and he was shocked ... but hey, he's not about to bash the girl.
“I didn’t expect it. But, obviously, I’m not going to hate. This is real-life stuff,” he said.
Vinny, who is busy promoting his new book, Control The Crazy: My Plan to Stop Stressing, Avoid Drama and Maintain Inner Cool, also praised his 24-year-old roommate’s “super-human” ability to anything ... or anyone. Just kidding.
In all honestly, she thinks Snooki will be a great mom.
“She can do extraordinary things,” he said. “In a partying way, she can drink more than anyone I’ve ever met; she can stay up for longer periods of time. She’s super-human. If she applies that to her parenting, she’ll actually be a good mom.”
“She’s like a human I’ve never encountered before,” he added.
That's high praise ... mostly. We think.
Meanwhile, Vinny is also opening up about his battle with chronic anxiety and depression, which caused him to briefly leave Jersey Shore during Season 5.
“I have generalized anxiety disorder,” he told Celebuzz. “It can be a panic attack. But what really bothers me, like you saw on the TV show, is, it can put me in a funk. It kind of disconnects me from everything around me."
"It’s just like a general depressed feeling.”
Exacerbating those feelings, Vinny Guadagnino says, was the Jersey Shore house’s party atmosphere, which he defends as more stressful than one thinks.
“People who might say, ‘Oh, all you do is party and have fun; how can that make you anxious?’ don’t get it,” he said. “We’re kind of stuck in a little bubble."
"You don’t want to be stuck when you have anxiety. You want to have your friends and family around. You don’t want to be on camera 24 hours a day.”
“You start to feel inadequate,” he continued. “Everybody else is having a good time and you’re like, ‘Damn. What’s wrong with me?’ It makes it worse."
"I made it through four seasons fine, so I was more upset with myself.”
Vin, of course, wasn’t the only cast member to battle personal issues. The Situation was in rehab for prescription drugs - which Vin never saw coming.
“He was just being Mike,” he said. “I had no idea - honestly. That’s his personality. I never say anything bad about him.”
Skype's fledgling Windows Phone app broke out of beta today, adding contact searching and landline calling to it's VOIP repertoire. The update comes just shy of two months of the Beta's introduction in February, and boasts a handful of minor improvements that should keep your calls connected. You'll still be making those calls yourself, however, as the full version doesn't yet have support for receiving calls in the background -- if the app isn't running, your phone isn't ringing. Last week it was revealed that new e-ink Kindles would sport new screens that would glow softly.
Amazon purchased Finnish light-guide firm Oy Modilis in 2010, which makes a certain kind of light-transmitting film, and the bookseller plans to use it in the next generation of its popular e-reader. But it looks like Amazon may not be the only e-reader maker with that feature. According to bookstore signage spotted by?The Digital Reader, Barnes & Noble may introduce ?a glowing e-reader, too.
Kindle's version of the glowing e-ink display uses LEDs in the bezel, which shine light through a layer of special material, bouncing the light downward onto the screen at an even rate.
Amazon claims the version it bought with Oy Modilis is the most advanced in the world. Barnes & Noble, it seems, found another way to do the same thing, and calls it "GlowLight." Similar functions exist, such as that provided by Flex Lighting, which advertised its technology last year.
Both techniques differ from backlit LCDs in that they bounce light downward off the passive e-ink screen rather than through an active LCD. The result is a softer, but less bright, form of illumination -- possibly more comfortable for cloudy days and reading in bed without a lamp. Neither product has a release date, but as the new Nook was recently delivered to Barnes & Noble retail stores, it will probably be arriving soon.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 9, 2012) ? Money doesn't buy happiness. Neither does materialism: Research shows that people who place a high value on wealth, status, and stuff are more depressed and anxious and less sociable than those who do not. Now new research shows that materialism is not just a personal problem. It's also environmental. "We found that irrespective of personality, in situations that activate a consumer mindset, people show the same sorts of problematic patterns in wellbeing, including negative affect and social disengagement," says Northwestern University psychologist Galen V. Bodenhausen.
The study, conducted with colleagues Monika A. Bauer, James E. B. Wilkie, and Jung K. Kim, appears in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
In two of four experiments, university students were put in a materialistic frame of mind by tasks that exposed them to images of luxury goods or words mobilizing consumerist values (versus neutral scenes devoid of consumer products or words without such connotations). Completing questionnaires afterwards, those who looked at the pictures of cars, electronics, and jewelry rated themselves higher in depression and anxiety, less interested in social activities like parties, and more in solitary pursuits than the others. Those primed to materialism by exposure to certain words evinced more competitiveness and less desire to invest their time in pro-social activities like working for a good cause.
In two other experiments, participants completed tasks that were framed as surveys -- one of consumer responses, another of citizens.' The first experiment involved moving words toward or away from the participant's name on a computer screen -- positive and negative emotion words and "neutral" ones that actually suggested materialism (wealth, power), self-restraint (humble, discipline), transcendence of self, or self-indulgence. The people who answered the "consumer response survey" more quickly "approached" the words that reflected materialistic values than those in the "citizen" survey. The last experiment presented participants with a hypothetical water shortage in a well shared by four people, including themselves. The water users were identified either as consumers or individuals. Might the collective identity as consumers -- as opposed to the individual role -- supersede the selfishness ordinarily stimulated by the consumer identity? No: The "consumers" rated themselves as less trusting of others to conserve water, less personally responsible and less in partnership with the others in dealing with the crisis. The consumer status, the authors concluded "did not unite; it divided."
The findings have both social and personal implications, says Bodenhausen. "It's become commonplace to use consumer as a generic term for people," in the news or discussions of taxes, politics, or health care. If we use term such as Americans or citizens instead, he says, "that subtle difference activates different psychological concerns." We can also take personal initiative to reduce the depressive, isolating effects of a materialist mindset by avoiding its stimulants -- most obviously, advertising. One method: "Watch less TV."
